Guidelines for Implementing a Waste / Used Oil Collection Program

  • Check with your local Fire Marshall, Fire safety officer or any other Government office having jurisdiction. They may limit the size, type and location of the storage tank.
  • Check with your State Environmental Department they may require a permit or a license for the collection of waste /used oil. They may also limit how many gallons can be stored at one time.
  • Your state environmental department should be able to give you a list of licensed waste/used oil transporters. In most locations in the United States you should not have to pay the transporter for picking up the waste/used oil.
  • The tank should be aboveground, double wall and installed on a level Non-porous non- flammable surfaces. It should also be protected from vehicle traffic.
  • Make sure the manufacture provides the proper venting.
  • The tank should be user friendly and aesthetically pleasing. If recycling is difficult the public will not take part.
